On our last day in Montréal the weather finally cleared—it had
been raining for two days straight—so Ingrid and I headed to the
Jardin Botanique (Botanical Garden). Unfortunately, we only had a few
hours to spend at the gardens and so we only saw about a quarter of it. In
that time I still managed to get a bunch of nice photos.
Lessons I learned (but will probably forget again):
- Don't be afraid to dial up to ISO400 or ISO800, particularly in the
glass houses, to get up to f/8.0 or so. This improves sharpness and
depth-of-field more than the noise degrades the image
- When light is a bit scarce, use Tv to keep an acceptable shutter speed
at the expense of aperture -- 1/160 second seems like a good value to avoid
camera shake
- Use exposure override of -1/3 to -2/3 on bright flowers against dark backgrounds, and check for clipping of highlights anyway
